Catalog Essay

My design for the BCC catalog displays diversity, and a warm feeling. I wanted to include pictures of people as well as landscape, so students can get an idea of what the school itself looks like as well as what type of people they can expect to see at BCC. My catalog design has incorporated the rule of thirds by creating the images my main focus of the piece. Getting to "know" and the see the college was my main focus for the viewer. You're eye then goes to the BCC logo which was important so people knew what college the catalog was for. Thirdly, the year of the catalog and slogan were made in a smaller font due to it being the part of the catalog that I did not want to emphasize. The principle of emphasis is incorporated into the fonts that I chose and the positioning of the pictures. I created the pictures to be the largest piece on the catalog to catch the viewers attention. I then enlarged the Logo because I thought that was the second focal point. As for alignment, I wanted to create a collage of pictures but did not want it to be too overwhelming, I placed the pictures spereatically but separated them jus enough that they don't collide with one another. I used contrast within the color scheme, yellow, gray and black work against each other in order for the piece to stand out. I also, contrasted the size of the photos. I used balance by placing the pictures in a form in which they all connected I also used small lettering for the piece not just be big and bold all over. As for flow and repetition I used repetition within the pictures, I outlined them all with yellow and for flow, I created the pictures to be speratic so that they lead your eye to the logo and right beneath the logo is the font. The colors I chose, I wanted to be simple and relate to the school itself, which is why I chose the BCC colors. I wanted a bright color to be used as an accent and not to overwhelm the piece.
